Men and women both can be attacked by a headache, but women experience more frequent and lasted longer than men.
This is true also for other chronic pain, such as joint pain and fibromyalgia (pain in most of the body).
Women experiencing chronic pain in all parts of the body’s more often 50% than men. Also migraine that attack one side of the head occur on women 2.5 times more often than men.
This was revealed in a study at the Atlanta Center for Behavioral Medicine. Quoted from Science Daily, these results were presented at the American Psychological Association in San Diego.
Researchers suspect that hormonal factors also influence the difference in perceived pain between men and women. This difference was detected mostly on entering puberty.
Some types of pain related to hormones like estrogen, also can affect migraines.
Chronic pain is pain that lasts about six months or longer if not treated. Some diseases that accompanied these symptoms include fibromyalgia, rhematoid arthritis (RA), irritable bowel syndrome and migraine.
Hormonal differences between men and women also affect their response to pain. If pain in men reacted more physical, and the woman in pain can affect emotions and moods (mood).
“Women that focuses on the emotional aspects of pain has a tendency to feel pain more intensely, because the general feelings related to pain is always negative,” said Dr. Jenifer Kelly, a psychologist who was involved in research.
Therefore, apart from suggesting various therapies to overcome the pain in women, Dr. Kelly also emphasized the psychological approach. For example, providing relaxation techniques and support Psychology in female patients.
